We walked into the In God We Trust sample sale just in time to hear a woman announce that she was going to have a panic attack. It was easy to sympathize: The sale had started at 4, and by 4:15 the tiny Lafayette Street shop was packed. If you go this weekend, be prepared to jab people with your elbows whether you want to or not—the space is just too small for politeness.
On the women's side, the brand's signature restrained, old-fashioned dresses seemed to be a big draw. High-necked, bare-backed dresses in khaki and navy were $140; a similar dress with a sweetheart neckline went for $169 down from $320. Coats were thick and warm and relatively reasonable at $225 down from $450. Unless you're looking for tees, expect to pay at least $100, although we did find one summer-weight dress with military-style buttons on the shoulders for $80 down from $225. And a pile of thin but very dark jeans went for $90 each, down from $180.
As for the menswear, much of it came from Hyden Yoo, including at least one appealing $69 flannel shirt and a corduroy jacket for $130 (reduced from $260.) House brand coats were less reduced than the one's in the women's section—$389 down from $480—but we did find a handsome military jacket for $159 down from $295.
We were a little disappointed by the shoe selection, which consists of a few Marais heels, some lace-ups for men, and some scattered Rachel Comeys, including one final pair of her tassel-front boots ($210, reduced from $420, size 7.5.) But if you fight your way to the back of the store, you'll find some great deals on accessories. Usually-pricey horse-bit berets are only $20, and the brand's signature jewelry goes for $10 or $20. The sale lasts till Sunday at 6pm; there are no dressing rooms, so layer accordingly.
