Discounted Luxury at the Temperley London Sale

Temperley London's ultra-feminine dresses and knits tend to average about $1,500 a dress, which is a bit steep. That's why we love their sample sales—at up to 75% off, a Temperley dress isn't cheap, but it becomes a much more reasonable option.

Today is Temperley's invite only pre-sale, held in their gorgeous second-story shop on Broome Street and run by the store's helpful and friendly staff. The public sale starts tomorrow at the same location and runs through Sunday, January 31st. The clothing is mostly regular stock, from as far back as the cruise collection '08, but most is from the recent fall/winter '09 line. Sizing goes up to an American 12, but Temperley tends to run a bit on the small side, so you might want to go up a size when you're shopping. There is one rack of samples, all size fours, but they were going fast when we were there. Very few were unique items; most had been put into production and were priced the same as the rest of the stock.

And speaking of prices and the rest of the stock...there are tons of cocktail dresses, including ones with embroidery, cut-outs, ruffles and studs, plus many of designer Alice Temperley's beautiful signature knits. The dresses range in price from approximately $150 to $600, with most falling in the $300s and $400s. There is also one rack of evening gowns, with prices ranging between $400 to $1800. There are some blouses and a few pants and skirts, but the wow factor comes from a small number of leather jackets, including some short gray fitted leather ones with ruffles that are running just under $500. Unlike at many of Temperley's previous sales, there are a lot of accessories, including a table of belts, hats and gloves, as well as a rack of leather purses ranging between $200-$400.

If you see something you like, but it's not out in your size, check with the sales staff. The store will be adding new items each day, so the piece you're looking for might be just be in the back.
