Wow, we really did not know what we were in for when we decided to casually check in on the Cole Haan sample sale this afternoon. We should have gotten a clue after a narrowly avoiding a stampede of exiting shoppers hauling multiple large shopping bags in both hands. As we entered the second floor sale, the lunchtime crowds were descending upon bags, shoes and accessories marked up to 75% off.
The handbags on the side tables to the right are still the highest draw, especially at the sample/irregular section where hobos, shoulder bags, totes and more were marked from $350 to $140. There were still a decent number of styles left, including the brown Whitney hobo currently featured in the Spring ad campaign. Other popular items were a $180 black croc patent tote and small croc print hobo bags in pink, black and nude for $139. Wallets in a multitude of sizes and colors averaged around $50. Also attention-catching were two pouch bag styles with straps· the burnt red with gold grommets Whitney for $50.20 and a hot pink python mini cross body bag for $51.20.
As for footwear, women's shoes are piled high in the middle of the room (you can't miss them) and run the gamut from Fall/Winter boots (like a great pair of mid-calf motorcycle style boots in black and brown for $100 and the Joanna tall boot at $175) to resort gladiators and sandals averaging around $42. Men's shoes were also a bit hit with the lunchtime crowds. We spotted sharp leather loafers with Air technology on sale for $98.40, suede lace up ankle chukkas 60% off at $79.20 and sneakers around $75. We also spotted $60 leather gloves sorted by size and other accessories in the back. There were also two completely ignored racks of men's and women's blazers marked down to $39.
The discounts are color coded—blue, yellow and no color are 60% off, neon green 65% off, red 70% off and dark green 75% off. Also, if you buy 3 or more bags or shoes, 10%will be taken off the highest ticketed item. (There were plenty of ladies taking up that offer.) There is a coat and bag check downstairs and at lunchtime, there was a line going up the stairs. Only credit cards are accepted and all sales are final. It looks like the folks at Soiffer Haskin want to keep the children safe from crazed shoppers (or not obstruct the aisles?), so strollers or children under 12 are not admitted. As we left, we witnessed one dejected stroller mom downstairs weighing her options.
