Fashionista reports that Target's next Go International collaboration will be with Tucker, designer Gaby Basora's line of floaty silk tops and dresses. As the Fashionista ladies point out, Tucker might be the smallest label ever chosen by the mega-chain. Just compare Basora with the two designers who will launch Target collabs earlier this spring, a couple of guys named Jean-Paul Gaultier and Zac Posen. But we think this pairing has great potential. Tucker is known for its prints, and while the Target collection presumably won't use the silk Basora usually works with, it ought to be able to replicate the brand's colorful, feminine aesthetic with cheaper fabrics.
It's possible that we're thinking about this because the New Yorker's take on Rodarte for Target is still fresh in our minds. The magazine talked to a Target VP about whether the store felt like it needed to teach its customers to appreciate Rodarte. "At a thousand dollars, maybe someone doesn't understand Rodarte, but at eighty dollars maybe they will understand it," the exec replied. The New Yorker's translation: "In other words, at eighty dollars a buyer doesn't have to understand Rodarte; she can a?ord not to."
That's the problem with translating something so high-fashion for a mass audience: Once it becomes something a shopper "doesn't have to understand," it loses all that fashion-as-art magic. Tucker, on the other hand, won't have that problem, since its appeal lies in its accessibility. As long as Target can handle the fabric issue, this collaboration should turn out lovely.
