Why It's Time To Make Your Semiannual Trip To Century 21

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The holidays are over and you're (hopefully) hanging a few new things in the closet, but really the shopping has only just begun with the post-Christmas, discount-after-discount season. And just as Loehmanns was swimming in excess Barneys stock a few months back, Century 21 is now having its big day with big brands.

Like any good Manhattanite, we tend to leave Century 21 to the tourists, who swarm the racks no matter the time of the year, but luck led us in there yesterday night and luck had us leaving with Rick Owens and Maison Martin Margiela dresses at prices we're almost ashamed to admit.

First, we checked accessories and found Missoni (and not M Missoni, but Missoni) scarves for half the price of what Gilt was selling them for yesterday. Then we hightailed it to the third floor for womenswear, and immediately began picking up items like Margiela tuxedo blazers, tailored Yves Saint Laurent vests with strong shoulders, stunning $800 Lanvin coats marked 50% off, and enough discounted Emilio Pucci to keep the population of Palm Beach satiated for a week.

We were again reminded why it's awesome to live in New York.

And then things got insanely better when we spotted a woman trying on a long Rick Owens coat straight off the runway. She pointed us out a rack of Rick dresses near the escalator and a selection of his delicious coats way in the back up against the wall, next to McQueen pieces and 90% off Hussein Chalayan silk dresses also from the runway (beware: half of the Chalayan dresses have minor damage). The Rick coats were marked between $500 and $800, but that's far far better than retail.

We scored a Rick Owens "scarf," which is really an angora knitted dress that is convertible to a giant scarf, for $79.99 and a silk Maison Martin Margiela shirtdress in a color that matches our eyes for under $50, on account of a much-welcomed 50% off sticker.

Century 21 may stock designer brands throughout the year, but right now is their huge after-Christmas sale, and with such fashiony labels present, it's about time you paid the tourist trap a tiny visit. Our only advice? Have patience and scan the racks for quality and unique cuts and designs.
