A new Ralph Lauren boutique moved into a 6th-floor space at Bergdorf Goodman during fashion week, but Fashion's Night Out and its terrifying Extreme Beauty displays had the windows occupied till this week. But now the RL mannequins are taking a turn in the display case with Fall 09's tweed hunting jackets, evening gowns, and in one case a tweed hunter's jacket with an evening gown. The best part is that these strangely attired dress forms appear to be having a very serious discussion about their taxidermy displays, and questioning the taste of whoever brought the white pelican skeleton. (We like to think it's the one wearing the evening gown with her sporting coat. She seems quirky like that.)
The non-Ralph Lauren windows are occupied by some intimidating block letters yelling at us like shocked maiden aunts. "How dare you," "Well I never," "No you don't," they say to some black and metallic Marni and Balenciaga and one spectacular pair of mirrored shoes by Alexander McQueen. The whole series culminates sort of strangely with a sudden change of voice and a triumphant "Yes I did!" over a dramatic Oscar de la Renta ball gown, leaving us all wondering who she is, what she did, and if wearing those mirrored shoes meant that everyone could see her underpants.
