Someday soon, the migraine trigger that is the Union Square Trader Joe's might become a place of peace. Reports the Observer: "Trader Joe’s is in discussions to open another low-priced, high-quality food store, complete with Hawaiian-shirt-wearing clerks, at the Mattel Building at 675 Sixth Avenue, between 21st and 22nd streets." Surely, if this comes to pass, it will take some of the pressure off the Union Square location.
In the meantime, our sibling site Curbed points out that you can see Trader Joe's signage in a new rendering for the building that will house it, a still-in-progress retail tower at 72nd and Broadway. This is very mysterious, as the company recently told the blog Westside Independent that they had "no confirmed plans" to open on the Upper West Side. Clearly, somebody here is hedging some bets.
