Offsite: Norma Kamali's Democratization Of Fashion

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

This morning there was just so much happening: Ralph Lauren was an offsite show, the subway had a fire or something which caused some trains to run express from Canal St up to Midtown, and it was raining. Needless to say, we arrived at Norma Kamali's Soho presentation at the Apple Store a bit bedraggled, but once we saw the smiles on the model's faces, our mood lightened.

Norma's theme for Spring/Summer 2010 is the "democratization of fashion," but with the way she's embraced everything from Skype to Twitter to high/low collaborations (Wal-Mart!), that seems to be mantra always. We arrived to the "runway," aka the Greene Street sidewalk, at the beginning of the walk. The models sported clear umbrellas and fashions from her OMO Norma Kamali, Wal-Mart, and upcoming eBay-exclusive lines. They then posed on a thin stage along the street, while photographers jostled with lucky pedestrians for the best shots.

Fans of Norma Kamali for years now, we recognized that her signature sleeping bag-style coats were front and center, but rendered in a grey sweatshirt material a la Wang's recent collection, but infinitely more wearble. Standout items included the sweatshirt blazer dress, the sweatshirt bandleader jacket, and a red jumpsuit that brought the pant fabric back up to tie around the waist.

Apparently there was also a presentation inside of the Apple store announcing the release of her Kamali's new iPhone app, which allows you to shop all three collections from your phone. We didn't even make it inside, but we can say that according to WWD, she also debuted an eBay collection, with all pieces under $250. There's no release date yet, but with both her and Narciso Rodriguez jumping on the eBay train, we better remember our password to the auction site very soon!
