Shipley & Halmos closed Milk Studios last night with their odd take on the Fashion Week presentation. There were no models—except the ones dancing about on huge projector screens. The videos—clean cut clothes on clean cut people dancing about on a sterile white background—were reminiscent of those old Gap ads: "Every in" whatever they were pushing that month. As a supplement to the videos, three or four totally mobbed racks along one side of the room unceremoniously displayed the collection. And the collection was, well, very Shipley & Halmos. The menswear was simple—slim, dark denim, slightly out-sized cardigans, oxfords in buffalo plaid, color-blocked tees and v-necks, double-breasted blazers and subtly-toned slim suiting for the boys. Womenswear was fairly straight forward as well: trim leather jackets, roomy silk and woven blouses, vented dresses and slouchy chinos for the girls.
If anything was a surprise it was in color and detail. The buffalo plaid was a refreshing combination of turquoise, tan, and navy; cardigans came in rich, warm yellow; denim came in primary red; silk graphic print dresses were royal purple: fun—not exactly cohesive. Detailing was a little less successful. For women: drawstrings on otherwise lovely buttery leather boy racer jackets were too thick, too black and cheap looking. Mesh venting on party dresses seemed a bit awkward. Stitching on (too short) mens' shorts was gratuitous. All that said—a wearable and very sell-able season for the boys at Shipley & Halmos.
