More details and specific events listings have just been released on Fashion's Night Out—Vogue and the City of New York's possibly vain attempt to stimulate shoppers and launch fall fashion week and a new season at retail. The citywide event takes place September
8th 10th and includes 700 and counting participating retailers in all five boroughs. Peruse the list at the event's homepage so you can start figuring out where to stop on the way from Bergdorf's to Margiela right now!
One such venue is a Macy's—a Macy's in Queens—where Wintour, along with Michael Kors, will launch the epic evening with a "a Vogue boutique showcasing trends." This begs the question: which current Vogue trends are available at a Macy's in Queens? Their hearts are in the right place, though, and the duo will sign Fashion's Night Out T-shirts for the first 50 customers while the cast of Hair performs. Things get started at 5:00 p.m.
Irrelevant designer Kenneth Cole is also getting in on the action by hosting irrelevant Hasidic rapper Matisyahu at his Rockefeller Center location. Not one to lose an opportunity to provide a soundbite, WWD quotes Cole as saying that the events should "remind consumers that it is OK to shop again. There is a pervasive sense at the moment that shopping for nonessential consumer goods is indulgent, frivolous and questionably appropriate. The fact is consuming is what we do and it is what keeps the economic engine going and continues to allow each of us to express ourselves individually." He must not be as excited about the Barneys Warehouse Sale as we are.—Frank Gargione
