Hermès Orange Is The Orange Of Construction

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

While The Awl muses over the fact that luxury French retailer Hermès is spending their recession expanding instead of minimizing or shuttering (ahhem, Escada), the busy construction bees at what will be the brand's first men's store continue to labor away in what used to be the old Luca Luca space.

Yesterday evening, sans hard hat, we peeked in on the work and can report that although the building renovations began over a year ago, they still have another year or more to go. By the time Hermès Men's opens on Madison Avenue, the recession will hopefully be only a memory, and we say "hopefully" so that perhaps the cashmere scarves and leather bags contained within the shop won't seem such a scandalous purchase.
