The Bowery's grit has, for the most part, been washed away by a wave of new condos, hotels, boutiques, banks and grocery stores. And retailers who were attracted to the stretch because of its grimy, storied past—like John Varvatos, who opened a boutique in the former CBGB Space last April—are capitalizing on that history with tees that command decidedly new-Bowery prices.
