Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Shhh...be quiet or it'll run away. Like spotting a rare albino deer, we cautiously approached the barely-open Comme des Garçons BLACK store, which debuted today under the High Line on Tenth Avenue. As at the CDG main shop on West 22nd Street, this is a sleeper hit; the design is very simplistic, all black and white, and the mood is seemingly calm. Except, you see, the prices are very un-CDG?we're talking between $120 and $660?and the stony-faced shoppers next to you are most likely shaking with excitement, readying to pass their credit cards over the counter and claim a bucketload of Comme.
During our visit, where we scored the very sneaky interior shots (while fearing for our Comme-purchasing future), Lynn Yaeger, formerly the fashion reporter for the Village Voice, dropped by and regaled all within earshot of the time she wore "the dress" from the Comme des Garçons x H&M line in Paris and everyone swore it was from the CDG mainline. She then tried on our favorite piece in the store: the $660 washed polyester tuxedo jacket with scalloped detail and tails.
Speaking of merchandise, most of it seems to be for women but can swing unisex. T-shirts run around $120, drop-crotch trousers around $330, and jackets between $360-660. Since this pop-up will exist for a healthy 18 months, they will be receiving new collections (please bring boiled wool for fall!). However, since they are keeping prices uncharacteristically low for CDG, don't expect any accessories aside from the single bag style featured in the window.
Word on the street is that the BLACK corner at Barneys, which also opened today, saw crazy traffic this morning. But the diehards, and you, our well-informed readers, will know to head straight here where the most variety is found.
