Yesterday, as Jeremiah's Vanishing New York was reporting on the demise of Arnold Hatters in midtown, a new hat shop opened on the Lower East Side. Victor Osborne, at 160 Orchard Street between Stanton and Rivington, is the first Manhattan boutique for the brand, which also has an atelier in Williamsburg. Osborne's hats are designed and produced locally, and the new space is set up to emphasize exactly how they're made—it's a sort of a workshop where browsers can watch the hats being put together. It may not be an old-school midtown hat shop like Arnold, but at least the city's hat balance has been restored.
