Pronouncing Designers' Names: The "Luxury Studies" Cliffs Notes

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Obviously, you don't need a tutorial on how to pronounce such challenging fashion names as Christian Lacroix, but for those poor anonymous souls who've spent years silently wondering whether it's "La-Croy" or "La-Crah," help is at hand. The Moment alerts us to a collection of short clips in which native speakers model the pronunciations of everyone from Givenchy to Hermes. Maybe the most interesting thing about the clips is their origin: The Imperial Hotel Management College (I.H.M.C.) in Vancouver assembled them for students in the "Luxury Studies" program. We're guessing enrollment is down these days, but regardless, if that sounds like a course of study you'd like to take, head over to blog Fashion Doohicky for a preliminary pop quiz.
