Family Matters: Mother-In-Law Visit Forces Gramercy Laundromat To Close Early

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Choire Sicha over at The Awl points us to an utterly charming sign posted in the window of Prestige II laundry in Gramercy alerting regular customers that the shop will be closing up early today so the owner can pick up his mother-in-law from Kennedy Airport. Sicha, "I find all this insanely delightful!" Hopefully they'll put up another sign when she leaves, telling us all how the visit went. "We will be closed at 7pm tonight. Mother-in-law left, need to sit in a dark room with a glass of scotch."
