Topshopocalypse Now: A Survivor's Account

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We escaped the Topshopocalypse this afternoon victorious, only slightly bedraggled and covered in Madewell coffee, and in possession of a new outfit, another reusable canvas tote bag, and a free white sleeveless t-shirt (thanks?). After decompressing and hydrating with the five or so bottles of Topshop water we acquired during our two-and-a-half-hour ordeal, we've been able to form some cognizant thoughts on the whole experience:

1) Sir Philip Green fancies himself a man of the people. The tan, rather rotund retail magnate could be seen chatting with customers all over the store. He took time to hang out with his wife Lady Green and shoppers in the shoe lounge, and greeted people at the entrance to the place. This was all in direct contrast to Kate Moss, of course, who seemingly fled the scene after her ribbon-cutting appearance.

2) The store has entirely too few dressing rooms. Now we know that today's an anomaly; the store will (most likely) never be this crowded again. Still, though—according to our hazy remembrances, there are only six or so fitting rooms per floor. Trying stuff on here is probably going to be a pain all the time.

3) The only reason to endure the lines and the madness and go to the store today is to get and use one of the free gift cards. They'll get new merchandise in daily, but after today, the cards expire.
