Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We can now verify that the reason for the crazy long line which had dominated the block around Broadway, Broome and Crosby Streets is those flippin gift cards handed out along with totes from the Heartschallenger van. While we stood in line on Crosby, around the corner yet from Topshop, the be-bowlered staff continued to be proactive about checking gift cards balances, and believe us that everyone had one.
Here is a snippet of what it sounds like to be standing in line: "Five dollars. Got a gift card? Let me check that balance for you. Five dollars. You have one too? Ok...ten dollars!"
We can imagine that people with gift cards who had to work a full day have been thinking about those things burning a hole in their pockets; expect the line to continue all the way through until 9pm closing time.
