Williamsburg Hipsters Dressed Perfectly For Next Great Depression, Says W Magazine

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Are hipsters in Williamsburg (and the LES) wearing old-timey outfits, grooming their scruff into old-timey facial hair configurations and drinking old-timey drinks in "response to the plummeting Dow"? Or are they dressing like it's the Great Depression because they are/want to be seen as starving artists? W Magazine thinks it's the former, but we're leaning towards the latter. Also, we seem to recall that the retro look was popular even when the economy was going gangbusters.
