Liveblogging the Shows: Calvin Klein

New, 3 comments

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: the minimalist, structural luxe of Calvin Klein.

Show location: 205 W. 39th Street between Seventh and Eighth Aves
The skinny: Tough, futuristic silhouettes with lots of texture: Felted jackets, spiderwebby blazers, laser-cut dresses, waterfalls of skinny ruffles, layered panels of shimmery fabric, and almost all of it gray or black. What color there was—an acid yellow-green—looked like a darker take on the neon we've seen at other shows.
Celebs spotted: Vogue's Andre Leon Talley, wearing a bedazzled jacket that said "The New American Dream" and sitting with a small child—the only famous person we saw, and really the only one we needed.
Takeaway: In tough times, some designers get nostalgic (hi there, MJ.) Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa took exactly the opposite approach, creating a feminine yet assertive wardrobe for the urban warrior.

5:15pm: We're inside the space at West 39th Street, for this second showing of Calvin Klein today. They are playing foreboding entry music, which switches to techno.

5:20pm: So far we have a bird's eye view as we've scored front and center. Modern minimalism coming right up!

5:21pm: Andre Leon Talley sighted with a little girl just before the lights dim.

5:23pm: It begins! Ah yes, black and black. Stark against the fully-white runway and backdrop.

5:30pm: Ok, people: we've got the most amazing view of the runway here. Just wait for the full gallery.

5:32pm: Our first take is that it's urban trooper mixed with sexy robot, and the super-high clunky heels from the future just keep coming.

5:35pm: It's over! Runway is shaped like a figure 8, but all models survived intact. There was more color than we expected, especially flashes of an acid green. Lots of laser-cut details and webby open weaves. We covet the oversize gray coat which looked shiny from afar, but up close was actually grey and white woven.
