Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: the colorful eccentricity of Brit Matthew Williamson.
Show location: The Promenade at Bryant Park
The skinny: Lots of color, lots of sparkle, lots of fur. A refreshing burst of coral, teal and burnt umber showcased on oversize wool coats, drapy dresses and narrow leather trousers. May items had light-catching beaded accents; clearly, Williamson isn't afraid of PETA or shine.
Celebs spotted: Not too many, but then again, it was an early show. You couldn't help but notice Kristen Bell, as she was surrounded by flashbulbs for a good five to ten minutes. Rachel Zoe appeared, flaunting those pipecleaner arms in a sleeveless top. We didn't see her, but apparently Eva Longoria was front row near Rachel. Of the New York celebs, Bill Cunningham from the Times was there, and Nina Garcia was front row with Hamish Bowles.
The takeaway: One of the kings of color and pattern mixing, Matthew Willy was totally on point this morning. Okay, occasionally he went a bit overboard (see also: the walking ball of ruffles), but the ombre coats and spirograph print column dresses were incredibly beautiful.
11:12am: In the house at Matthew Williamson. Kristen Bell is here and lady is posing like a pro for the photogs. Flashes around Eva Longoria and Santigold.
11:17am: Now entering the stadium: Rachel Zoe in a white beret and sleeveless top, exposing her trademark toothpick arms.
11:24am: Clearing the runway! It's Matt W Time, and Bill Cunningham of the NYT is making the photography rounds.
11:25am: More editorial stalking: Nina Garcia and Hamish Bowles sitting front and center.
11:27am: Lots of pretty coral colors and metallics; Matthew knows his strengths. Oh no- coats will poofy fur collars. We see a huge trend for next winter: fur puffballs on your head and neck.
11:30am: Seeing a bit of an adirondack print rendered in bright colors and of course more, more fur.
11:32am: A wash of beige now and sparkly beaded touches on everything. What happened to the dove gray and charcoal that dominated other runways? Dull is not Williamson's style.
11:35am: Actually loving the ombre wool coats he is showing. WHOA - this dress is literally a ball of ruffles.
11:37am: It's just ended. We are stuck in the mass trying to exit with A-listers, which is always interesting.
