Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: whimsical womenswear from Thakoon.
Show location: Eyebeam on West 21st and 11th Avenue
The skinny: We arrived to our seat just before the show began, and so any celeb-spotting was held until the finale. As for the show, we noticed very few prints and an inordinate amount of dyed fur. The Giuseppe Zanotti disco ball heels were stunners.
Celebs spotted: Ikram Goldman (Michelle Obama's kinda-stylist), Grace Coddington, The Sartorialist and Linda Fargo, VP of Womens at Bergdorf.
The takeaway: Fur in shades inspired by tropical birds mixed with disco ball, '70s influence. We were disappointed at the lack of prints and the abundance of shaggy fur, but loved the silver sequins encased in black tulle.
3:23pm: I'm here, I'm seated, it's a packed house. Bill Cunningham is shooting people outside the venue. They're about to start.
3:27pm: Main buyer for Bergdorf Goodman here in the front row.
3:28pm: Person who could be Anna Wintour sitting ten feet from me. I see only the back of a long black fur coat and a bob.
3:32pm: Guy next to me, "I shoulda brought a seat cushion."
3:33pm: Starting now.
3:34pm: Update: Is not Anna. Sadness.
3:35pm: Lots of gray, as we've been seeing elsewhere. Tufts of fur on hats. Heels of shoes are disco ball-like.
3:39pm: He's showing purple and black now. Few prints, some deconstruction.
3:42pm: Color! Orange, green, blue, mustard. And sorry PETA, but we see some fur.
3:43pm: Seeing some disco ball-esque little black dresses. Just like at Hervé.
3:48pm: Some initial thoughts: The collection was very 70's inspired, and he's not doing a ton of prints this time. There were multi-colored fur coats and only three or four print dresses. And this is interesting: A couple seasons ago, D&G did this thing where they wrapped feathers in tulle; today, Thakoon wrapped silver sequins in black tulle. Sign of the recession: no swag bag.
3:51pm: I'm trying to leave. Am currently behind Vogue creative director Grace Coddington.
3:52pm: Michelle Obama style mastermind Ikram is here! Scoping potential First Lady outfits no doubt.
