Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: Justin Timberlake's denim-focused line William Rast.
Show location: The Tent at Bryant Park
The skinny: Justin Timberlake and Co's down south denim brand shows in the main tent and evokes punk hillbillies who may have gone crazy with a stud gun.
Celebs spotted: We gasped at the appearance of Anna Wintour and daughter Bee Schaffer, who not only came to to Timberlake's show, but smiled and laughed all the way through it. Also on the scattered scene were Aubrey O'Day and her dog (of Danity Kane), Jessica Biel, Miss J, Robert Verdi, and Robbie Myers of Elle sitting next to Ugly Betty's Mark Indelicato.
The takeaway: It was 1980's trailor skinhead in a way with which we were not comfortable. The overdoses of fringe, studs, and acid-washed denim were too showy and tacky to be marketable. We highly doubt that Justin would ever wear one of these looks on stage.
6:45pm: I just took my seat. It's still really empty in here.
6:49pm: They are playing some old-school, lively blues.
6:53pm: On the program it says, 'Music - Justin Timberlake and DJ Ani'
6:55pm: There seems to be some confusion regarding the seating. Apparently, there is a row of confirmed seats that doesn't exist. Watching the PR girls figure this one out is going to be fun.
6:59pm: Meanwhile, a full family of six just sat down next to me. Little kids and all.
7:03pm: There's a massive boom in here. They're filming.
7:06pm: JT's hardbody girlfriend Jessica Biel is here. From other attendees' Twitters, Anna and Bee are seated as well, but it's impossible to see them.
7:13 Miss J and Robert Verdi have arrived.
7:14pm: The show begins!
7:15pm: Jeans paired with little leather jackets and American flag tees. He really reached with this one.
7:16pm: Now seeing plaid jackets. And is that...a feather necklace? Denim shirts paired with jeans continues the vaguely southwestern theme.
7:17pm: Into rock 'n' roll. Black jeans with lots of zippers, little grey vests, more studded leather jackets.
7:18pm: Last look: male model in faded jeans, red plaid shirt, a fringed black leather jacket and fringed black leather shoes. Hm.
7:19pm: Long blazers over longer plaid shirts and tees. And now, a model wearing a furry vest over her fringed leather jacket.
7:20pm Knew that acid-washed denim was coming.
7:24pm: Tarty chophouse waitress look followed by a model in a huge double-breasted blazer atop acid-wash jeans. WTF
7:22pm: Somebody loves his stud gun.
7:24pm: And it goes on and on. More man blazers, now in a shiny black fabric, paired with light-colored jeans. Female models in sheer black shirts.
7:26pm: We've reached fringe overload.
7:27pm: Anna Wintour is smiling and laughing with Bee. Doesn't seem too focused on the show...strangely.
Aubrey O’Day spotting. Ew.
7:27pm: It's over! Model parade time.
