From the Tents: Inside the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

This year's Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge is a very cheerful affair—all big white leather couches, yellow chairs, and pink pillows. This is where editors and assorted VIP types congregate backstage—publicist Kelly Cutrone was here when we arrived—so maybe it makes sense that the place is currently swimming in male models (more on that in a bit, if we can get them to sit still long enough to take a picture.) Amenities include a bar, free 'wichcraft food, and, in a minor stroke of genius, an area for quick outfit changes kept private by a big pink screen. For all of this, it appears we have Obama to thank: Designer Eric Villency says he was aiming for "a color palette imbued with bright colors to whimsical motifs that embrace a unifying theme of hopefulness."
