Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: Fun yet sophisticated looks from Diane von Furstenberg.
Show location: The Tent at Bryant Park
The skinny: The name of this collection was "nomad", which translated to earth-toned, layered looks with chunky jewelry and pom-pom-covered hats. The styling was beautiful, as usual.
Celebs spotted: Diana Ross sitting next to Diane's husband Barry Diller, Molly Sims, Julia Stiles, Claudia Schiffer, Carine Roitfeld, Simon Doonan, Rachel Zoe, Diane Sawyer, and Heidi Klum.
The takeaway: As at Marc Jacob's last show, pattern-mixing and almost hodge-podge layering continues as a trend. Pops of metallic and animal print also make an appearance, brightening up the earthy color scheme.
3:53pm: We're in! The whole Tent is orange, like the sun is setting.
3:56pm: Diane Sawyer just arrived.
4:00pm: Spotted: Julia Stiles.
4:03pm: OK, now the celebs are all turning up. Rachel Zoe looks pretty good. Molly Sims has her hair pulled back really tight, like oddly tight. Julia Stiles is wearing a flowered dress and looks lovely, but she didn't do anything with her hair—it's just hanging down. Marcus Schenkenberg is here, too, but he's everywhere. Most random sighting: Laurel Touby from Mediabistro, wearing her trademark glasses (no boa) and looking completely out of place.
4:10pm: By the way, they're filming this for The City, so they keep pushing the standing room crowd around to make room for the cameras.
4:13pm: Anna is here looking extremely bored.
4:15pm: Wow, Claudia Schiffer! She looks amazing.
4:17pm: Little Simon Doonan just walked in.
4:20pm: The whole Elle crew is here, but they're not seated together. Carine Roitfeld just arrived. The place is packed—there are a lot of people still coming in, and more outside. I don't know how they're all going to fit. Oh, and Lynn Yeager just walked in.
4:22pm: The fall collection is called "Nomad."
4:25pm: Heidi arrives. Did she get extensions? Her hair looks longer than yesterday.
4:27pm: The people behind me are talking about Rachel Zoe in Portuguese.
4:31pm: It's begun! Giant flower-covered hat things—would you call those turbans? Rich, vivid colors and dramatic, mismatched prints. Tons of reds and purples.
4:32pm: Wait. O. M. G. Is that Diana Ross?
4:35pm: Now we're seeing more black and white, again with the layering over other prints. Some shimmer in the fabrics. Lots of pants. Print pants. Camo-leopard print pants!
4:36pm: OK, now we're seeing more turquoise and blue. Those hats just keep coming. Also, distressingly, sandals with socks. By the way, the music is insanely loud—so loud they can here it outside. (How do we know this? Because we're everywhere.)
4:39pm: And it's over. Diane does a lap in an animal-print dress.
