Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
In an effort to make reading Racked as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: Sporty experimentalism from Yohji Yamamoto's collaboration with Adidas, Y-3.
Show location: Pier 40 at the Hudson River
The skinny: Returning to the same venue as their last F/W show, Y-3 hosted a ginormous show in a square format, forcing the models to walk a wide circle and letting everyone get a great view As usual, lots of black accented with bursts of color; this time the colors were red, navy and a little orange.
Celebs spotted: Kanye was back avec entourage for another showing today, along with Milla Jovovich, Reggie Bush & Kim Kardashian, Ian Thorpe, Tom Sachs, Tyson Beckford, and randomly even Rufus Wainwright. All these are well and good, but the star of the evening was without a doubt Yohji Yamamoto himself; we've been to quite a few Y-3 shows, but this is the first time we've seen him take a bow. Also, Lynn Yaegar seems to be making it to all shows as usual, and Fern Mallis came down from Bryant Park for the show (really, just for Yohji).
The takeaway: Like we said in the live-blog, it's totally Phantom of the Opera meets sailor. Except now we'd add to that a little equestrian fun and some truly intriguing Yohji touches that make the whole brand one of our favorites. We were delighted to witness the introduction of a full children's line at this show, and of course the kid's moms got to watch them strut their stuff.
5:00pm: At Pier 40 on the Hudson (parallel to West Houston St.), heading into Y-3 show.
5:05pm: Milla Jovovich getting photographed in the fading sunlight. Inside: Tyson Beckford in da house!
5:13pm: Think there will be gymnastics? Could be: there is, well, a giant floor mat.
5:21pm: No swag, but a giant noisy heater! Nice touch.
5:26pm: OMG so much space left. They need more standees to fill. Paging... er, anyone wandering along the West Side Highway this afternoon?
5:27pm: Pitch black in here. Can only tell celebs have arrived by flashbulbs on the horizon.
5:30pm: Former Village Voice fashionista Lynn Yaeger is in front of me. Second row! Some guy has his luggage with him, and not in a stylish way, either. Strong move, dude.
5:31pm: Celebs trickling out from backstage. Whee. Yay. Whee. Milla getting 'bulbed!
5:33pm: Meanwhile, in the cheap seats: woman in front of me has fiery red hair and a jacket of unappealing black fur that keeps brushing up against me, like a feral cat.
5:39pm: Kanye is taking a seat with his posse. Though arguably he's being upstaged by a random guy in a full-on bellhop cap. Fashion Week '10 emerging trend alert!
5:45pm: Plastic coming off mat. But, er, here we go!
5:47pm: How does this grab you, as concept go: Phantom of the Opera meets Sailor. How does it grab us? By the neck.
5:50pm: Y-3 kids OMG FTW 4EVS.
5:52pm: Runway color update: Navy and red, or black and white. Also! Black sequin men's shoes!
5:58pm: Another whole group of kids. YAY. Fact: I am buying these boots.
6:08pm: Yohji came out at the end! With like 10 kids. "Adorbs" doesn't even remotely cover what's going on here.
6:12pm: Fern Mallis spotted trying to exit. How dare she abandon the tents!
