Cartier Whips Out Early Christmas Decorations

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Can you even believe that already stores are dragging the tinsel and jingle bells out of the moth balls? We aren't even anywhere near the Thanksgiving Day parade or Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and yet Cartier is the first out of the gates with their ginormous red ribbon and bow.

These decorations, along with Saks Fifth Avenue's large facade snowflake lights, went up several days ago; we snapped this picture on Wednesday, and already the holiday anxiety was palpable. Next thing you know, the Sunday paper will be 7 pounds of Target and K-Mart glossy ads, and the elaborate model train layout will be chugging around in Grand Central. Still, you just know that Cartier is licking its chops over holiday spending after the retail season we've had.
