Storecasting: Canada's Shadowy Nygård Corporation Plans Imminent Broadway Takeover

Peter Nygård, Canada's most mysterious fashion mogul, has been plotting a headquarters on Broadway near Bryant Park for years now. This Friday, a key element of his plan falls into place when the Nygård flagship opens down the block at 1431 Broadway between 40th and 41st Streets. Nygård is no stranger to drama—his HQ is marked by a giant, multiple-stories-tall "N"—but the plans for the store sound like total sensory overload, even for him. Reports WWD:

His name is also spelled out in blue on the front of his new flagship at 1431 Broadway, a few steps from the headquarters. A blue ticker surrounding the perimeter of the 2,500-square-foot store alerts customers to the grand opening on Friday. Inside, 26 screens play fashion show loops and explain the Nygård collections...A large video wall shows photos of Nygård with VIP customers such as Pamela Anderson.

And that's not even taking into account the massive monitor showing nonstop fashion shows, or the outdoor screen, or the waterfall, or the "blue plastic circular forms Nygård describes as 'the rings of Saturn'" (which go above the waterfall, obvs.) Oh, and don't expect the store to be illuminated by any ordinary kind of light: Nygård developed a new shade, called "white blue," with lighting experts in Asia. All this hoopla is necessary to beat not only the recession, but revamp NYC retail geography. "We treat Broadway as an outdoor mall," Nygård told WWD. "It will be the biggest outdoor mall. We're expecting this street to become a big shopping street."
