In The Window: Heartthrobs And Heartache At Barneys

October: it's a lull time for window displays, between the rush of Fashion Week and the lead up to the holidays, and yet Barneys manages to maintain steam through the season.

Their latest womenswear window pairs Lanvin?shoes, handbags, clothing?with posters of the hottest heartthrobs from back in the days. Think James Dean, Kim Novak and Cary Grant. Basically, what Barneys has done here is quite clever. They've targeted an older customer by choosing these stars; the older customers who live on the Upper East Side and would happily lay down thousands of dollars for a skirt were teenagers or younger when these stars made their hearts beat fast. The still have that effect today, and as the grown-ups look into the windows and see the heartthrobs of their youth, they associate the pleasurable feelings with the clothing. And they simply must. have. it.

Bravo, Barneys, bravo. Manipulation of feelings is always an easy way to make a difficult sell.
