Robin Givhan wants designers to stop showing only fancy party clothes. A designer who puts out only foofy organza fantasies is taking the easy way out, she says, and avoiding the much more difficult job of designing clothes for a woman who might need to drive a car or go outdoors before 8pm. "A menswear designer, by the way, would never fill his runway with variations on tuxedos and dinner jackets to the exclusion of everything else," the Pulitzer-winning critic says.
