Tonight, HBO premieres Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags, a documentary about the Garment District. Nanette Lepore, who has been fighting for years to keep the neighborhood from becoming a casualty of gentrification, plans to use this opportunity to draw more attention to her cause. This Wednesday, she will round up fellow fashion bigwigs like Michael Kors, Anna Sui, and Betsey Johnson for a "Save the Garment District" rally starting at noon at the button-and-needle statue on 39th Street and Seventh Avenue.
Of course, clothing production isn't the only thing that's been priced out of midtown: The Daily News talks to the women behind new line Eva Khurshid, who "are able to oversee the production of their line, a collection of chic separates and wearable day dresses, because everything is just a subway ride away from their apartments in Queens and Brooklyn."
