Online Sample Sale Sites Convert Billion Dollar Babes to Their Legions

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

As if you didn't already have too many sample sale notifications in your inbox, Billion Dollar Babes, who call themselves the "world's premier designer sale" and arrange shopping events on both coasts, have joined the online sale ranks. The site, "BDB Without Borders," copies the original Gilt Groupe formula of offering members a single label on sale for a short period of time.

Like Gilt, membership is free but selected, although they've gone and made it more confusing and lucrative (for them) by incorporating their paid gold and platinum tiers. Having launched their sales on December 18 with AG Jeans, they continued on a weak streak with Taryn Rose shoes and Charriol jewelry. Things may be looking up, however, as Tuesday has them hosting a Hayden-Harnett sale.

It's a scary time for anyone addicted to e-tailing; there's a glut of other newish sale sites, like HauteLook, Regent's Secret, ideeli, GlamList, RueLaLa, TheTopSecret, Editors' Closet, Shop It To Me, and Net-a-Porter's upcoming OutNet. Even though the recession may be an excuse for the birth of these sites, we're pretty sure they're just tempting more poor Midwesterners into impulse online shopping. To compete for the top labels at the lowest prices, BDB sure has their work cut out for them.
