Above the Fray: Tokidoki Takes Over Met Pavilion

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It's cute overload gone literal in Chelsea as the Tokidoki for LeSportsac sale takes over the Metropolitan Pavilion with a whole floor full of bags covered in the comic characters of Italian illustrator Simone Legno. There may be no line out front, but it's a whole different scene upstairs as kids and moms go crazy among the tables of purses, backpacks and totes.

Tokidoki has a huge cult following, most of whom seem to have taken the day off of work in order to stock up on a bag in every style and color. For those anxious to hit the sale, we have to warn that the discounts are nowhere near the promised 60-80% off. The cheapest price, $55, will get you a mini-purse which is barely more than a cosmetic case while the most expensive, $95 for a backpack, is actually a good deal better than the retail price of $248. In any case, be ready to be assaulted by a sea of colorful cartoons.
