Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
It's been over a year since rumors surfaced about the downfall of the Virgin Megastore in Union Square, and with the proposed final closing date of February 1st inching nearer, the desperation for sales is palpable.
Like flies to a carcass, shoppers are swarming the Virgin and sniffing out god knows what from the leftover clearance racks. For those of you interested in imported Kid Rock singles or Logan's Run DVDs, the store is running a "virgin sacrifice" sale, which translates to "please take 75% off of this clearance crap so that we can close already." It's getting difficult to watch the last days of Virgin, what with Circuit City's neighboring liquidation also under way, but we'll have more on that later.
