We're Not in Kansas Anymore: Ruby Slippers at New York Fashion Week

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Proof that things are a total circus around here: We were in the tent for hours before we noticed the ring of ruby slippers designed by everyone from Manolo Blahnik to Gwen Stefani's line L.A.M.B. in glass cases around the central fountain. They're part of a fund-raising effort sponsored by Swarovski crystal, which will auction them off and donate the proceeds to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Each designer reinterpreted Dorothy's famous footwear in his or her own way, making it sort of fun to guess which shoes are by which name (the L.A.M.B.s, for example, immediately scream Stefani.) In keeping with the Wizard of Oz theme, someone very detail-oriented planted red poppies underneath. Jezebel went to the shoe's launch party last night, where they photographed many Project Runway alumni and noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker.
