Hey, you know what sounds like the most depressing place ever to go shopping? The area right outside the entrance to one of New York's largest jails, Rikers Island. A City Room writer stopped by the place for a little browsing, dropped into a bullet-proof-glass-covered jewelry store, and chatted with a guy that sells hot dogs out of a truck. "The hot dog man, Mr. Samolis, said he often gives free food to inmates who are released from Rikers, since they often have no money." Who knew their first taste of freedom would be so meaty and warm? Seriously, though, that's really nice of him. [City Room]
