Taking a break from the insanity of the tents for a few hours, we headed down to Chelsea to check out up-and-comer Julian Louie's first-ever solo presentation at Drive-In Studios. The designer, a protege of Francisco Costa at Calvin Klein, likes to play with volume and color. Some of his pretty little dresses had fin ruffles at the hems, others had bubble backs. Louie also has fun with fabrics: a cropped jacket made of neoprene topped a silk faille top embroidered with Swarovski crystals. The effect was sophisticated, though, and not at all costumey. On our way out, we noticed Elle's Kate Lanphear chatting with the designer. She left in vertiginous high heels and climbed into a black SUV, we swapped ours out for flip flops for the long trek back to the subway.
