[L to R: Tomine, Spiegelman, Hockney]
Graphic novelist Adrian Tomine isn't the only artist to get his very own Strand tote. The bookstore's Artist Series also includes bags by Art Spiegelman and David Hockney. Both come with histories attached: Art Spiegelman, the artist behind the graphic novel series Maus, originally drew his mouse drowning in a sea of books for the Strand's 80th anniversary last year. And David Hockney came up with his sketch, a self-portrait in which he's hiding in a pile of books, on a visit to the Strand in the '70s. The series officially launches today, which means more collaborations with artists will start turning up shortly.
