Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
The lines have not abated, friends, and so we're back with another dispatch on how the waits are shaping up today. New development: NYC Apple stores are currently OUT of the 16 gig black iPhone. Oh, the humanity.
Apple Midtown
Line length: We're talking two to three hours, but luckily it's looking more like two than three
Availability: Fully stocked with everything but the 16 gig in black
Color: So far this morning, we've heard two passersby asking, "What is this line for?" How can they not know?! Apple staffers are working the line, passing out information—supposedly activation times are down to 10 to 15 minutes per person.
Apple SoHo
Line length: We were quoted two hours by an Apple dude, but the line looked longer than yesterday's. So two at the very least.
Availability: "We've got everything. Oh, no, sorry, out of the black 16 gigs."
Color: People looked tired and bored. Many were sitting. Waiting on line for the iPhone—not cool anymore?
Apple Meatpacking
Line length: Two to three hours
Availability: As at Soho and Fifth Ave, they've got everything but the black 16 gig version.
Color: Nothing much happening over here. Bunch of people drinking coffee and waiting for an iPhone. Just a regular old line.
