In the Window: Paragon Sports' Eco Initiative

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Union Square's mighty outdoor outfitter Paragon Sports has jumped on the eco bandwagon. No, they won't be handing over your spandex bike shorts in a hemp tote or soliciting donations for a save the ferns charity. Instead, Paragon has decked out its windows along Broadway to inspire human-powered activities over road trips.

There are the brilliant (track shoes as "alternative fuel" and cycling as "one less car") and the questionable (aerobics as "carbon footprint" and going to the beach as "conserving for the future"), but it still makes a striking and thoughtful display. Next time you just have to swing by Union Square to pick up a canoe or a new Squash racquet, you can feel now better about your expensive sports hobbies.
