Above The Fray: Giving A.P.C. An A-

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If loud public chastising (the shout of “8 minutes for 8 items!” was directed at soul after soul by a staffer referred to as “fascist” by shoppers) and fervent crowds doesn't put you off, the A.P.C. sample sale is a solid choice for both male and female bargain hunters.

The good news: Though there's a range of discounts, most styles are half-off. The 30% off items are marked with the typical red dot, while the 50% off items are unmarked. Even more good news: the sale includes shoes. Sneakers were sliced to $90; most of the other shoes were only 30% off. The selection, however, was slim as of early this afternoon.

As for the clothing, there was not a lot of variety in men’s trousers and denim. There were, however, plenty of black pants, for the masochists in the city this summer. If you're in the market for a top, some men’s shirts were marked as low as $40. For women, dresses and blouses reigned. Most styles featured on their online store are present in-store with a decent spread from S to XL.

In comparison to the online sale, however, the in-store sale wins. Many women's pieces are sold out online, or are only available in larger sizes. Another reason to visit the store instead of browsing via the web: an A.P.C. bot reassured us that they would be restocking throughout the day and all weekend.
