In the Window: Ricky's Tries to Go Green

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We're not quite sure what exactly the Ricky's at 267 West 23d Street is celebrating with this window; is it Earth Day, 4/20, or remnants from St. Patrick's Day? Seems like it's all three, with such assorted goods as "Jesus Rocks" and hemp air fresheners, fabric headbands with a condom-like plastic decoration, and various scents of hand sanitizer.

If this is Ricky's attempt at promoting environmental awareness, then it's really only the single "Reusable" tote that fits the bill. The rest of their featured kelly green plastic products are strewn about like garbage in Central Park after St. Patrick's Day. Because nothing says "Happy Earth Day" like brown hairbands and socks in a plastic case, right?
