Coffee House Wars: Dunkin' Throws Down the Gauntlet

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Tomorrow is the day, dear readers, that all Starbucks go dark from 5:30 to 8:30pm. The mass shuttering was planned so that the coffee chain has time to reprogram retrain staffers on the art of "the perfect shot, steaming the milk and all the pieces that come together in a drink." Or really, how to correctly operate the machines that create the perfect shot and steam the milk, since the whole process is automated now. Anyway, rival Dunkin' Donuts sees this as the perfect time to swoop in and steal Starbucks' customer base. From an email that landed in the Racked Inbox:

A certain upscale, green-logo'd mackaccino chain will be closing its doors on Tuesday night, February 26, for a mass barista training exercise (stop inhaling the retail, kids?). You can tell your friends most likely to explode into a caffeine-withdrawal freak-fit that Dunkin' Donuts will be filling in with a 99¢ latte/cappuccino special from 1-10PM. And you know, chocolate-glaze donuts with pink sprinkles, 24-7.
Sounds like bitter, watery war.
