Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
It's time again for Shopping The Personals, a Racked feature wherein we comb through the retail-based Missed Connections listings on Craigslist.
Last week, we posited that if you're going to try to pick someone up in a supermarket, Whole Foods may just be your best bet. Perhaps we were wrong, and any old food shop will work. Here, an assortment of tantalizing yet brief encounters at other grocery stores around town:
1) Upper West Side: "We were just on line at the deli counter at Fairway..u were #73 and i was #79...discussed ham...wasn't sure if ur friend was just a roommate or more. Would love to discuss ham some more with u...." [Listing]
2) Upper West Side: "You were shopping in Food Emporium at 68th and B'way around 8 PM. We commented on the ice cream after cruising each other on several aisles. I really wanted to comment about your beautiful blue eyes." [Listing]
3) Park Slope: "Just saw you at the checkout in C-Town on 9th Ave between 5th and 6th...you had a hat on but I really liked your beautiful blue eyes. You looked (and looked again through the window) but I wasn't sure if I should stop and I was in kind of a hurry..." [Listing]
4) Williamsburg: "It was late afternoon at a crowded Tops. I was wearing black tights, yellow skirt, gray hoodie and black coat. I am tall and have long dark hair. I was checking you out multiple times but was there with my roommate and we were both hungry and on a mission to get some food. I liked everything in your basket, so if you remember me, maybe we can go shopping some time." [Listing]
