Storecasting: Cheap Soho Boutique Takes Advantage of Howard Street

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Chances are that when you put your head down to quickly walk through the touristic hordes along Canal Street, you not focused on noticing the names of the tacky boutiques that lurk behind and next to the vendor stalls. One of these such stores specializing in polyester clubwear, Amsterdam Boutique, is wisely taking advantage of the decrepit doorways of Howard Street.

Their newest store, arriving between their current locations at 365 Canal Street and 454 Broadway, lands only steps away from the new Nike Sportswear and American Apparel stores. We imagine that the rent for the space isn't much since it's in desperate need of work, but once the cheap sparkly drape tops and cheetah-print pants start selling to tourists, the place will pay for itself in no time.
