Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Consumer spending is down, unemployment is up, Heidi and Spencer just eloped—it's a bad time to be selling anything wedding-related. Which is why De Beers and Tiffany's would both like to remind you that diamonds, unlike It bags, are forever. "We're overwhelmed by possessions we own but do not treasure," points out the sage text in a De Beers ad, offering a small diamond as a cure for consumer malaise. Tiffany's copy is a little bit less circumspect: "For less than you imagine, the best there is." As for Cartier, they've renamed themselves Crazy Eddie's House o' Bling. [NYP]
