Mobil Homeless: MePa Gas Station, Car Wash Sold

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The terrible economic climate hasn't held up MePa's transformation into an open-air shopping mall. Old businesses continue to be pushed aside for new retail clients, and now, the Post is reporting that the neighborhood's Mobil gas station and car wash has been sold off. Our friends over at Curbed remind us that the property "had been dangled on the market as a potential high-end strip mall, so news of the sale is not surprising." An RKF broker told the Post that once the site is rebuilt, the new owner (Milk Studios' Erez Shternlicht) would most likely develop the first and second floors for shopping. Given that it is a cobblestone's toss from the sweet, sweet High Line, we're sure they'll have no trouble finding tenants.
