Payless Flips the Green Switch

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Payless will fight the good fight in April 2009, when they launch a green and affordable collection of footwear designed by Discovery Network's Summer Rayne Oakes. "Not only will the shoes use sustainable and eco-friendly materials such as organic cottons and linen, natural hemp and recycled outsoles — but they’ll also average under $30. That’s an incredible accomplishment for an industry where green can mean spending more at checkout." The line will initially launch at 500 stores, after which eco-practices will be included in manufacturing other Payless product. Watch out, Natalie Portman! [Ecorazzi]
