Rackage is a look inside recently-opened stores around town. Today, we take a peek inside discount shop Denim & Knits.
Describing your store as a permanent designer sample sale is a bold move, especially when the "designer" items are t-shirts and denim. FiDi newcomer Denim & Knits, located on the decidedly unglamorous corner of Cortlandt Street and Broadway, doesn't exactly live up to its claim. The clean, white space is well organized: one side of the store is devoted to men's denim, the other side to women's, and jeans are grouped by designer on the racks. The problem here is price. Though they are offering premium denim (we spotted coveted styles by J Brand, Paige and others when we dropped in yesterday), the cost of the clothing is a tad, a tad, high. Women's pairs go for $110, and men's are marked $115 apiece. The shop does offer some deals on t-shirts and dresses, with $22 tanks, $30 tops and $45 frocks, but selection on non-denim items is limited. With some digging, you can find much, much better deals at discounters like Loehmann's. At Denim & Knits, the editing's been done for you, and you're going to pay for that convenience.
