Is there a sadder sight than row upon row of bare supermarket shelves? The struggling Associated on Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park, once home to the usual assortment of fruit and veg and meat and dairy, was recently bought out by a local food co-op. According to Ditmas Park Blog, the store is dying a slow death: "One of the managers, Barry, says he'll 'play it by ear' as to when the place actually closes, but he's already shut down the air conditioning. I don't think I've ever been in an un-airconditioned supermarket before, but it does give you a real end-of-civilization feeling." Spooky.
